Festive Chic
The Christmas spirit is unmistakably upon us, with flickering lights, sparkling trees, and early dustings of snow. I am actively preparing my house and fully embracing the holiday festivities.
As the years have passed, I no longer create a Christmas list of presents to buy or even food to prepare. Without children and having lost my mother earlier this year, I know I’ll feel an emptiness this Christmas that cannot be filled. However, I am determined to enjoy the festivities in her absence and am grateful that London has so much to offer.
Enjoying the atmosphere of my favourite stores, like Harvey Nichols, during this magical time of year is simply irresistible. It's not just about shopping; it's a nostalgic journey that brings back the joy of finding the perfect gift. I remember the excitement of beautifully wrapping each present and then stepping back to witness the smiles when they were opened. That moment, accompanied by the classic sounds of Bing or Frank in the background, made the season truly special.
No Christmas shopping trip is complete without a visit to Fortnum & Mason in Piccadilly. I indulged in beautiful pop-up cards and biscuits. For many years, the first floor was filled with tree trimming and baubles, and I always made sure to buy something new. However, I no longer have the need or space for more decorations. Fortnum’s is lovely throughout the year, but it is especially breathtaking during the Christmas season.
Harrods is always a must-visit. I worked in the food halls for seven years, and while Christmas was always chaotic and hard work, it was also a lot of fun. The store is expensive and unique, with a touch of flamboyance—there's truly no comparison. With pink reindeer and beautiful flowers, if you enjoy spending and sparkling, this is the place for you., beautiful flowers if you like to spend & sparkle this is it.
Christmas markets are essential for food enthusiasts. I confidently purchased a couple of bottles of moonshine and some delicious chocolate rum. A stall featuring personalized tree ornaments offered ideal gifts for neighbours who host drinks and nibbles evenings. At the Trafalgar Square market, perfectly located in the winter sun, I soaked in the breathtaking view of Big Ben warmly illuminated against fountains bustling with schoolchildren and tourists.
Taking time for a coffee, discovering local attractions, and surrounding myself with a positive atmosphere are essential priorities in my life. While I may not frequently choose casual attire, I refuse to let the pressures of the Christmas season dictate my wardrobe choices. Embracing my style and wearing what I genuinely love is refreshing and empowering. It's a reminder to focus on what truly matters amidst the holiday chaos.
Tomorrow is December 1st, the 20th anniversary of my father's death. I would rush to open the advent calendar door years ago, but I haven’t brought one for nineteen years. Now, I sit and enjoy a festive film, a glass of Eggnog, or watch the skating at Somerset House. I remember my Mother's enjoyment of anything Dickens-related while my dad blasted his Elvis Christmas records through the ceiling into my bedroom.
